I have been wanting to make my own deodorant, free of harsh chemicals for a while now. So I asked AI to help me. The results were surprising and easy to doFollowing here are the Instructions and Technique suggested for my query. Hope you try it. Be sure to let me know in the comments.
I chose to use Corn Starch rather than Baking Soda because I think it would be milder on sensitive skin.
The Coconut Oil I used is from Kirkland and is Organic, Virgin, Cold Pressed, and Unrefined.
The essential oil I added is Tru Lavender Essential Oil from HIQILI. It is 100% Pure and Natural and it is therapeutic grade.
Ingredients:
1/4 cup cornstarch
4–6 tablespoons of coconut oil
No more than 20–25 drops total of your choice of essential oil
Process:
Rather than use the microwave I made my own double boiler; using a glass bowl over a saucepan with an inch of simmering water. This method ensures the ingredients melt gently and incorporate smoothly.
Melt the coconut oil in the top part of the double boiler, whisk until it is fully liquid.
Remove from heat. Once the oil is melted, take the bowl off the heat. Be careful not to allow water into this mixture.
Mix in the cornstarch: Gradually whisk the cornstarch into the melted coconut oil until it is completely smooth and all clumps are gone.
Add essential oils: Stir in your choice of essential oils for fragrance and their natural antibacterial properties.
Transfer to storage: Pour the mixture into a clean glass jar or a used (and cleaned) container.
Set: The mixture will solidify as it cools. You can place it in the refrigerator for about an hour to speed up this process.
Once the deodorant is firm and at a stable temperature, wipe any potential moisture from the rim of the jar and screw the lid on tightly for long-term storage.
Pro-Tips for Application
Use a Clean Applicator: To extend the shelf life (which is typically 6–12 months), use a small wooden stick or a dedicated stainless steel scoop rather than your fingers. This prevents moisture and bacteria from entering the jar. If necessary whip for fluffier texture.
Warm it with Fingers: If the cream is very hard (common in winter), hold the pea-sized amount against your underarm for a few seconds. Your body heat will melt the coconut oil, making it easy to spread smoothly without needing to stir the whole jar.
During the summer months you may want to keep your deodorant in the refrigerator.
